Education Software Addressing Quantitative Models of Human Performance

This is the homepage for the Cognitive Systems Engineering Educational Software (CSEES) package. CSEES is an integrated toolset designed to facilitate curricula related to human judgment and decision-making performance modeling and evaluation. CSEES provides students with the means to generate and analyze performance data using multiple methods. Its flexible design facilitates adding new judgment and decision making task environments.

CSEES is implemented as an extension of Microsoft Excel. It requires Microsoft Windows with Microsoft Excel installed. It also requires that the Microsoft Excel Data Analysis ToolPack be installed. Instructions on installing the analysis toolpack can be found here. You should install both the Analysis Toolpack and Analysis Toolpack - VBA.

CSEES was developed by Matthew Bolton, Jackson Kwok, and Ellen Bass in the Systems and Information Engineering Department at the University of Virginia.

CSEES in the Press

CSEES was cited in the cover article of the Spring 2007 edition of Ergonomics in Design:

Wu, C., Liu, Y. (2007). Usability Makeover of a Cognitive Modeling Tool. Ergonomics in Design, 15, 8-14.

CSEES at SMC

A paper on CSEES was presented at the IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics (SMC) 2005 International Conference: Bolton, M. & Bass, E. J. (2005). Cognitive Systems Engineering Educational Software (CSEES): Educational software addressing quantitative models of performance. 2005 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics. October 10-12 2005, Hawaii.

A copy of the paper can be found here.

Responding Universities

In early 2005 the makers of CSEES conducted a survey of the human factors engineering and cognitive engineering programs in the United States to determine what resources were being used to teach these disciplines. A list of responding universities can be found here.
